SUMMARY:Plone Theme Creation Simplified
DTSTART:20101028T135500Z
DTEND:20101028T144000Z
DESCRIPTION:Themeeditor aims to reduce the amount of expert knowledge
required to produce a Plone theme. Historically\, theme creation has r
equired knowledge of many "moving parts" such as viewlets\, zope page
 templates\, generic setup\, zcml\, css\, html and buildout. \n\nTheme
editor provides a single location where a new theme can be created by
customizing an existing theme. The resulting customizations can then
be exported to a filesystem based theme product.

SUMMARY:Connexions and Enterprise Rhaptos -- A Global Education and Plone Success Story
DTSTART:20101028T151000Z
DTEND:20101028T155500Z
DESCRIPTION:Connexions (cnx.org) is a global repository for textbooks\
 , courses\, and learning materials\, used by 1.5 million learners a mo
nth. All materials are free and adaptable for local needs. Connexions'
unique quality control system puts schools\, universities\, and commu
nities in control using its flexible lensing system (cnx.org/lenses).
Connexions provides authoring tools for creating\, versioning\, and ad
apting materials\, and provides automated services for viewing everyth
ing online\, for printing PDFs\, for printing books on demand\, and fo
r creating EPUBs. When authors update materials\, they are updated onl
ine\, in print\, and in mobile formats automatically. Over the past ye
ar Connexions has introduced "Enterprise Rhaptos"\, the open-source so
ftware built on Plone and Zope that runs cnx.org. We spent a year gett
ing the code ready for external development and use and released the n
ew version in February 2010. Enterprise Rhaptos provides all the funct
ionality of Connexions so that organizations can run their own reposit
ories. The new release has also increased the size of the developer po
ol for enhancing Rhaptos and Connexions. This last year also saw the c
reation and expansion of the Connexions Consortium (cnxconsortium.org)
to support Connexions global repository and the Enterprise Rhaptos so
ftware. The membership includes universities\, community colleges\, pu
blic education systems\, academic organizations and businesses all com
mitted to the preservation of this global education resource. \n\nThis
high level talk will focus on the ten year journey taking Connexions
from inception to a mature\, sustainable repository benefiting learner
s world-wide\, including the creation of the consortium. Of interest t
o technical leaders\, the talk will also include our year-long process
modernizing the development environment to use standard Plone and Zop
e tools\, releasing Enterprise Rhaptos\, and supporting new external R
haptos users and developers. At the end of the conference we will be h
olding a sprint as a case study for a Plone 4 upgrade to Rhaptos. Many
of our external developers are here at the Plone Bristol conferece an
d will interject their own perspective.

SUMMARY:Plone Boutique\: a guide to automated and low-budget Plone 4 development on the cloud
DTSTART:20101028T135500Z
DTEND:20101028T144000Z
DESCRIPTION:Yes\, we said development\, not only deployment. Plone (h
ttp\://plone.com) is an attempt to standardize and automate developmen
t and deployment practices for small teams of developers working with
Plone 4. The base of the guide is a ZopeSkel template that creates a P
lone add-on that hold Python code\, HTML/CSS\, Sphinx documentation fo
r your project and deployment tools. The guide takes design decisions
so you don't have to. Deployment is fully automated (with Fabric)\, al
l you need to do is run a simple command in your buildout environment.
\n\nThroughout the guide we strive to keep costs low but still focus
on best-practice and productivity. Outsourcing hosting\, code reposito
ries\, issue trackers\, email and archiving will keep you working on p
rojects that bring you money and not loose valuable time. Running mont
hly costs for a small developer team with one simple commercial projec
t can be as low as $40 (with each additional project costing another $
 11).\n\nYou will hear about Plone 4\, Fabric\, Hudson\, Munin\, iptabl

SUMMARY:Going Global \: Using Best Effort Translation To Build High Quality Multilingual Websites
DTSTART:20101028T151000Z
DTEND:20101028T155500Z
DESCRIPTION:Best effort translation\, which dynamically combines machi

translators\, enables you to create high quality multilingual website
s\, while also optimizing for cost\, quality and response time. Unlike
traditional translation methods\, which are slow and expensive\, this
methodology enables you to publish draft translations immediately whi

DESCRIPTION:organizations including art museums have changed radically
the way they use the web. Based on the online strategies of several a
rt institutions\, such as\, Tate Online[1]\, we tweaked existing Plone
features and developed new Plone products in order to fulfill specifi
c needs of organizations. \n\nWe developed an online platform using P
lone that is more content oriented rather than structure oriented. We
included live streaming media not only on the front-page but also on s
emantically relevant pages. Plone is being successfully used as a medi
a online archive. Recent information and activities are historically c
ontextualized with relevant archival material using a newly developed
Plone product. Finally\, Plone has been extended with a new product th
at enhances Plone with the possibility to automatically republish cont

SUMMARY:Easier and faster Plone theming with Deliverance and xdv
DTSTART:20101027T112000Z
DTEND:20101027T120500Z
DESCRIPTION:One of the first things that people want to do with their
Plone site is customize the look-n-feel. This usually requires making
a Plone theme product which is an involved process and demands someone
with programming skills. The process to take an existing website desi
gn and implement it in Plone requires a good knowledge of Plone themin
g engine\, and usually the ones most skilled to create the design are
the least skilled to implement it in Plone.\n\nBut what if you could m
ake your Plone look like any website design knowing only basic HTML/CS
S skills? Well\, there is a tool available that lets you do just that.
Deliverance is a middleware service that sits in between your Plone s
ite and your website design. The website design template can be any ar
bitrary HTML/CSS - there's nothing Plone specific about it. This talk
will give clear examples of how to get started using Deliverance to cu
t down your Plone theming from days to hours.

DTEND:20101028T115000Z
DESCRIPTION:Plone is one of the easiest CMSes to download and install
on your local machine\, but what about when you need to deploy it to a
production server for public consumption? Unless you have a trained s
ystems administrator on your team\, you're going to need to learn abou
t Apache vhosts\, setting up caching proxies\, load balancing\, logfil
e rotation\, backups and security issues. \n\nThis talk will cover al
l aspects of getting your Plone site production ready and feature many
tips and tricks to make your job easier. We will discuss the various
hosting strategies including the new breed of virtual cloud servers fr
om Amazon\, and tools to easily manage a cluster of machines and monit

SUMMARY:Scalable and high availability Plone hosting with Amazon EC2 for Rice University's Enterprise Rhaptos open education platform
DTSTART:20101028T101000Z
DTEND:20101028T105500Z
DESCRIPTION:Rhaptos is the Plone-based open source software that power
s the popular educational materials portal CNX.org which receives 1-1.
6 million visitors every month from all over the world. As a very popu
lar resource for so many people\, it's imperative that the site is arc
hitected for high availability. With data centers in Houston near hurr
icane territory\, it was critical to have a backup plan for where to h
ost the site in the event that the data center was destroyed.\n\nThis
talk is a case study for how Rice University together with external co
nsultants came up with a virtualization of the Rhaptos platform\, to b
e able to quickly launch new instances on Amazon EC2. The deployment w
as completely automated for both multi-server production environments
as well as one-off demo and testing instances. We'll show you how this
was done and the tools and methods we used to make a rock solid solut
 ion.

SUMMARY:Plone Alone?
DTSTART:20101028T110500Z
DTEND:20101028T115000Z
DESCRIPTION:This will be a brief history of the ups and downs of using
Plone in the Medical Sciences Division at Oxford. I'll have to explai
n some of the infuriating idiosyncrasies of working in an academic ins
titution - so you can come and mock\, sympathize or empathize at that
bit. However my aim apart from self-pity will be to demonstrate the fl
exibility of Plone in meeting the challenges of content management in
a complex distributed environment and the power of an exemplary open s
 ource project\n\nIf you're considering Plone\, content management or o
pen source then I hope this will be a useful talk (I'd be thrilled if
you could learn from my mistakes as it would make it all worthwhile).
If you're a member of the fabulous Plone community and have helped us
or worked with us\, then come along and see if you get a mention\, plu
s understand a little better why we in the MSD appear to be completely
  mad.
